9/11

Tuesday, September 11, 2001
I got up that morning for school. Still groggy from my usual lack of sleep and irritable to get up so early. My mother had the news on as usual when we first heard about the first plane crash. The second plane crashed not long after. I don't recall what I did, or heard, from home to school. But I do remember being in a daze watching the news in my first hour sophomore science class. I saw the buildings fall, despite how they said the buildings should last. But the fuel of the airplanes kept the flames alive and melted the thought-to-be-fire-resistant metal which made the buildings collapse. We later found out about the other planes. One sliced through the Pentagon. Another fell before hitting its target- the Capitol or the White House- because there were people that were determined not to be used as a weapon against their own country.
Unarmed civilians, pilots, flight attendents, workers, firemen, policemen- people, acquaintances, co-workers, friends, family were lost. Most unknown individually by the country but still heroes. My heart and prayers go out to them and their loved ones.
I will NOT forget 9/11!!

I talked with some of my students about 9/11 yesterday. One of them has a birthday today ... most don't remember a whole lot about what happened (this was nine years ago and they were all ages 5-8 at the time), but they were all interested to learn more. I'm glad we're not letting the world forget.
